A nest box is a place where laying hens deposit their eggs, either fertilized or unfertilized. Nest boxes are needed for those who keep chickens for eggs. One nest box for every four or five hens is typically recommended so that the hens have enough places to lay.
Nest boxes can be individual boxes sized for one hen each, or a kind of long shelf with a lip that is called a community nest box. For community nest boxes, allow one square foot of community nesting space per four to five hens.
