Whether you currently have no animals on your farm or a dozen different species, you may be asking yourself: what animals should I raise? Is it worth keeping sheep? Chickens for eggs for the family versus for market? Do I raise a heritage breed? How many different species do I want to have on the farm? Am I going for a menagerie hobby farm, a sufficiency-focused, but species-diverse homestead, a small diversified farm business or a specific niche-product-focused farm?
Ultimately, you'll need to develop a farm business plan to answer some of the questions, but during that process, you'll want to read about the pros and cons of various types of farm animals: what kind of care they require, how easy it is to leave them in someone else's hands, what they're like to raise, what kind of fencing they need. I've compiled a starting point for you on your journey, a place where you can read about many different animal types on one page, and go in-depth where you're interested.
