The USDA's Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program is getting under way.
More than $18 million is being made available for programs for beginning farmers - which the USDA defines as those who have been farming less than 10 years. As the average age of American farmers rises, the USDA is stepping up to help young people access the resources they need to start farming. This particular program isn't for individuals directly, but for
a collaborative, State, tribal, local, or regionally-based network or partnership of public or private entities, which may include: state cooperative extension service; community-based and nongovernmental organization; college or university (including institutions awarding associate degrees); or any other appropriate partner.
If you have such a network, organization or school in your area, bring them the information - ask them to apply. Make sure they know this opportunity is available!

This sounds good, but what is it exactly? How can it help me as a recently disabled woman turn my small back yard chicken flock into a farming business? Last summer,, I focused on grow my flock from 4 into 60 and I will double that in a weeks time with new chicks and bloodlines! I will also have a rooster for every 3-4 hens, but these all require coops, fencing, watering systems, nest laying areas, incubators to produce my own chicks from now on.
I have put together a business plan, but need an access to funds. I’ve done a tone of research so far and am proud of everything I’ve accomplished on my own. Now, if I could just have some help on this final stage. Anyone out there have the desire to help me? Point me in the right direction?
Thanks so much!!!
Mari
I have been wanting to farm a CSA farm since the 80′s but the cost of land is so high that It has prevented me from beginning. Could a CSA farm qualify for this kind of grant and if so could the money be used to purchase land? Thanks Lisa
