Using an Almanac

By , About.com GuideSeptember 14, 2009

Follow me on:

The newest editions of the United States' two most popular almanacs, The Old Farmer's Almanac and Farmers' Almanac, are published every September, so the fresh 2010 almanacs are hot off the presses.

Both forecast a colder and snowier winter than usual, but long-range forecasts aren't the only thing in an almanac. You can use a farmer's almanac for planting guides based on the moon, and they're filled with farm-related reference information - everything from the serious, such as the length of gestation for a goat, to the hilarious, such as how to hypnotize a chicken! (That truly could come in handy sometime!)

Both almanacs also feature a variety of articles both humorous and useful, and certainly good reading during the upcoming forecasted-to-be-frigid long winter. Tell me how you use your almanac! Which one is your favorite? What is your favorite part, and what have you found to be most useful?
