Braids of garlic.

Garlic - yum! Who doesn't love garlic? And now's the time to prepare your soil, order your bulbs and choose your varieties. Will it be Inchelium Red Garlic, a softly robust artichoke variety in Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste, or perhaps Lorz Italian Garlic, also in the Ark?

Hardneck garlic has a stiff stalk and is better suited to cold climates, while softneck is what you're likely to find in the supermarket and is adapted to growing in warmer climates.

Depending on where you live, September to November can be garlic planting time. Make sure you have well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0, with plenty of organic matter. Get the scoop on growing garlic properly and plant plenty!
