Getting Started in Farming

Often it can be overwhelming to know just where to start with your farm. A business plan is a good place to begin, if you're planning to earn any income with your farm venture. Also, taking time to do some farm planning will pay dividends later. Be clear on your farming goals.

Read as many books as you can. Make use of the many online resources for beginning farmers, especially loans and grants that are targeted specifically for those just getting started in farming.

Living in the burbs or city? Don't worry. Start small. Start where you are. Urban farming is a movement that's gaining traction in suburban and urban areas. Many cities allow chickens, and you can have chickens in the city without making a stink.

And don't forget to talk to your local farmers. Reaching out to the small-scale farming community wherever you live is so important!
