Where Do Your Chickens Live?

Thursday July 2, 2009

When it comes to raising chickens, there are a lot of options. What you choose might depend on where you live and the amount of land you have available to you. Urban farmers and homesteaders might choose to keep a flock of 3 or 4 hens in a coop with a small run, while those with more room to spread out might allow their flock to roam freely among the pasture and woods, and keep the garden and the area around the house fenced off.

Another option is electric net fencing, which involves a bit of setting up, and requires moving the fence and movable coop fairly often (every few days to a week or two, depending on the number of hens and the size of the enclosed pasture). This is the method of management I've settled on for my flock of 35 laying hens.

How do you keep your chickens? Where do they live? Please vote!
