A Healthy Harvest From the White House Garden

By , About.com GuideJune 19, 2009

Follow me on:

The White House Garden, planted in March, is now producing, and First Lady Michelle Obama invited students from nearby Bancroft Elementary, who have been working in the garden from the beginning, to enjoy a harvest dinner with her on Wednesday.

The First Lady spoke about how important eating healthy, real food is, and how kids can become more connected to food through growing it themselves. Although she didn't talk about small farmers directly, she did mention community gardens as a way to make healthy food affordable and bring communities together, too.

The growing awareness of the connection between health and good nutrition (with plenty of farm-fresh veggies!) is so encouraging to see. What do you think of the White House Garden? Is it a success? How can we make the tie to small-scale farms and local foodsheds more explicit? Come share in our forum.
