When did you first feel like a farmer? Was there a moment, a task, a milestone you reached when suddenly things clicked and you felt like a true "farmer"? Or was it gradual, and you woke up one morning feeling it? Or, did you grow up on a farm, and can't even remember when because you've always felt like a "real" farmer?
For me, the moment came last year when my husband and I raised our first batch of chickens for meat. Before that, it had all felt a little bit like playacting for this raised-in-the-burbs New Yorker. But when we took responsibility for providing ourselves with not only vegetables and eggs, but meat as well (including processing our own birds), I definitely felt a shift.
I've always felt the next level will be having more than one species of farm animal...something we are actively working toward this season! Stay tuned for more on that...and in the meantime, share in our forums - what tasks, milestones, or events make you feel like a "real" farmer?
