Harvest Longer With Succession Planting

Hey, all you lucky folks already pulling in the first of this year's harvest! Be sure you continue to plant, especially crops like lettuces (if it isn't too hot where you are, or plant bolt-resistant varieties in a shady spot), beans, herbs such as cilantro, and tomatoes. When the first round of plants come to harvest, you'll have another set halfway there for later in the summer. Succession planting is a great way to ensure lots of tasty veggies to bring to the farmer's market all season long.

No more garden space, you say? How about adding a raised bed and perhaps even using more intensive plant spacings? A raised bed is a quick and easy way to gain more garden space, and it often eliminates problems with weeds or dealing with stony, poor soils.

You can use the materials you have available to dictate the style of bed. We happened to have a ton of cedar logs from our land. A friend of ours had some 2 by 8s left over from a building project. Use what's around you!
