Ideas for Alternative Crops and Enterprises

By April 19, 2009

Follow me on:

I stumbled across this list of alternative crops and enterprises put out by the USDA's Alternative Farming Systems Information Center, and thought I'd pass it along. There are some great ideas for business-oriented, innovative crops for the small farmer to grow. Things like birdseed! I would have never thought of that.

In fact, the list spans a variety of categories of crops: fiber and industrial oils, edible oils, fuel oils, food grains, legumes, specialty and ethnic veggies, fruits and nuts, agricultural/agroforestry products - just the entire gamut from bamboo to fish bait to luffa gourds. It even includes services like wool processing and spinning and custom slaughter. And it even includes livestock and animals to raise, including specialty items like water buffalo and rheas.

Enjoy dreaming up some new plans for your farm!
