It's baby season on the farm! Chickens remain the most popular first farm animal for beginning farmers and homesteaders, and baby chicks are so much fun. You can order them online, or at your local feed store. Concerned about ordering online? This FAQ will reassure you and tell you all you need to know.
With so many choices of breeds, how can you pick? I share some tips for picking the best breeds of chickens for your needs. The upshot is, you'll still have a lot of choices once you've narrowed down whether you need heavy breeds or ones more suited for hot weather, and whether you are raising chicks for eggs, meat, or both. So - just pick what appeals to you. And don't worry about mixing breeds. They'll all get along fine whether they're just one breed or many. But, if you're going to breed chicks for show or to preserve one breed, you might need to pick just one breed, or house each separately.
